Community commitment fires Miss Lebanon entrant Amanda Antoun, of Marrickville, is an entrant in Miss Lebanon Australia competition.

Rashell Habib

AMANDA Antoun’s kind heart, giving soul and bright mind make her the perfect contestant in the Miss Lebanon Pageant.

The pageant has been running since 2000, and has become a national event, with the winner going overseas to compete in the international finals.

The Marrickville woman is studying to be a teacher and was encouraged to enter by her family and friends to widen the cultural understanding of the Lebanese community in Australia.

It is not her first time in the spotlight, having featured in the film The Combination, about the Lebanese community. She also starred in a film called Burn, teaching young Australians about the legal system and crimes that affect society.

‘‘The point of the pageant is that they don’t want someone who is just pretty, but someone who can help the Lebanese community and make a contribution to the wider community,’’ she said. ‘‘I value all the little things that make each and every person unique. My motto is about appreciating the extraordinary in the ordinary.

‘‘I want to be able to show young women out there the potential to succeed is within everyone and you don’t necessarily have to be born within a rich or affluent family to do something of worth.’’

Every second Saturday at Marrickville’s Banana Joes, Miss Antoun will hold a sausage sizzle to raise money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the Westmead Medical Research Foundation.

The pageant opens on March 8 and the finals are on May 1. Visit misslebanon.com.au

Motto: "Do the ordinary things extrodinarily well"

I believe that success comes to those who appreciate the little things in life and work hard on what they have been given, rather than wishing for what they don’t have. This has shaped me into the self determined young lady that I am today. Having inspiration from my family, my religion and my culture I am happy to say I wouldn’t want it any other way! With the opportunities that Australia has given to the Lebanese culture it is beautiful to see how well it has been accepted and acknowledged in such an amazing country. It is this reason that I am proud to represent my nationality and show the people of Australia how blessed we are to say that we are Australians with a Lebanese background.

With the passion for acting, I recently featured in the ‘Combination’; a film that was designed to help Anglo Saxons understand the ways in which the Lebanese community adapted to the Australian society. I also starred in an educational film called ‘Burn’. This was intended to teach young Australians the legal system and the different crimes that affect society. I have a strong passion for my youth and strive to help others appreciate the value of life.

I am currently studying a Bachelor Of Arts Degree at Norte Dame University in Broadway. I am majoring in Theatre Studies with the hope to become an actress, something I have always dreamed of. In saying this, the love for teaching has also developed from a young age so I am minoring in Religious Education. I hope to graduate as a High school Teacher at the same time have a Degree in Theatre Studies. I love being a University student interacting with students and teachers at the same time recieving great education.

I am best known for my smile, my sense of humour and the fact that you could meet me for the first time and feel as though you have known me forever. I value all the little things that make each and every person unique. My bubbly personality and outgoing nature has made me realise by doing ordinary things and putting in the extra effort is what truly makes us extraordinary.

You can see more of me on Twitter MizMande. thank you.

It was a great experience and I am happy to be representing a community that is supporting me 100%. I hope to be a role model for all the young people out there who have a dream and want to one day achieve it. Im proving that anything is possible with faith and determination. I look forward to hopefully seeing it in next weeks paper. Watch out for it !

With this determination, I took on the role early in the competition to look for supporters and sponsors who were willing to stand and support my dream in becoming the voice of young women through the title of Miss Lebanon Australia. This therefore led me to target my local community Marrickville starting at my favourite local food works, Banana Joes 256 Illawarra Rd Marrickville.

They openly heard my proposal and offered their 100% support towards me and the charities. In saying this they saw potential in what I could achieve if they gave me the opportunity. On the 13th of February I began my first sausage sizzle fundraiser outside the Banana Joes store commencing at 11am. With their permission I was able to stick up my posters and hand out leaflets in which I have made to guide people on the ways to vote and sponsor. It was a wonderful day and I met many supporting individuals who were happy to learn the Lebanese culture. Such made customers aware of the importance of charity and giving to those in need. With the success of the fundraiser, Banana Joes gave me the permission to conduct one every second Saturday; with my next one on the 27th of February.

Hi all, having conducted a few fundraisers I was determined to come up with something that was different and that would be enjoyable. Something that would allow all us contestants to really work together to raise money for our charities and show eachother support. It was then that i decided to organise a walkathon from Annandale to Bay run a 12km walk/run. It will be a great way to show our fitness and to interact with eachother outside from the pageant world. I am still in the process of organising it and putting it together but It will hopefully take place on sunday the 21st of March. I will keep you all posted on the event and whether or not the location or date will change. I hope everyone can come along and join the fun!

Malaysian Airlines

Overview

Find out how Malaysia Airlines came to be and how much we've grown over the years.

Our History

Malaysia Airlines had its humble beginning in the golden age of travel. A joint initiative of the Ocean Steamship Company of Liverpool, the Straits Steamship of Singapore and Imperial Airways led to a proposal to the government of the Colonial Straits Settlement to run an air service between Penang and Singapore. The result was the incorporation of Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) on 12 October 1937. On 2 April 1947, MAL took to the skies with its first commercial flight as the national airline. Fuelled by a young and dynamic team of visionaries, the domestic carrier turned into an international airline in less than a decade.

With the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the airline changed its name to Malaysian Airlines Limited and soon after, Borneo Airways was incorporated into MAL. Within 20 years, MAL grew from a single aircraft operator into a company with 2,400 employees and a fleet operator using the then latest Comet IV jet aircraft, 6 F27s, 8 DCs and 2 Pioneers. In 1965, with the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, MAL became a bi-national airline and was renamed Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA). A new logo was introduced and the airline grew exponentially with new services to Perth, Taipei, Rome and London. However, in 1973, the partners went separate ways; Malaysia introduced Malaysian Airline Limited, which was subsequently renamed Malaysian Airline System, or simply known as Malaysia Airlines. Today, Malaysia Airlines flies nearly 50,000 passengers daily to some 100 destinations worldwide.

The airline holds a lengthy record of service and best practices excellence, having received more than 100 awards in the last 10 years. The most notable ones include being the first airline with the "World's Best Cabin Crew" by Skytrax UK consecutively from 2001 until 2004, "5-star Airline" in 2005 and 2006, as well as No.1 for "Economy Class Onboard Excellence 2006" – also by Skytrax UK.
